Be prepared for your holiday with a European Health Insurance Card

No one expects to get ill or have an accident on holiday but unfortunately sometimes it happens. When it does, often people are unprepared for the cost of medical treatment abroad so It is important to be prepared for your holiday and any problems which may occur.

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the old E111 in 2006. The EHIC is free to UK residents and entitles you to reduced healthcare and sometimes even free medical treatment whilst you are on holiday. However, it is not an alternative to travel insurance; it does not cover lost or stolen property or the cost to be flown back to the UK in the case of an emergency. Therefore, it is still very important to purchase travel insurance when travelling abroad to help cover any unforeseen medical costs.

Many insurers will insist that you have an EHIC and without one the excess can be very high. You can apply for the card for yourself, on behalf of a partner and your children via the official EHIC online application form. Here, you will need to give details of each person’s full name, date of birth and National Insurance number as part of the application process. The card will then be sent out to your home address within 10 working days, and is valid for 5 years.

Don’t panic if you forget to bring your card on holiday with you, as long as you apply online you are still able to receive medical benefits by quoting your online reference number. A certificate will then be sent direct to the medical institute where you are being treated. For more information, visit the website.

Spain’s Beaches tops Blue Flag Programme

Every parent knows that the simple combination of a bucket and spade and a good beach can make for a great family holiday and it’s been revealed that Spain’s beaches have been ranked as some of the best by the Blue Flag Programme. The blue flag signifies that the beaches are environmentally sound, with good water quality, environmental management safety and standards and one in every six Blue Flag beaches are located in Spain.

Marbella has been celebrating, as it was revealed that they are the town in Andalucia with the most Blue Flag beaches – an amazing 9 in total. Two more beaches were awarded Blue Flags this year which recognises the investment that has been made to improve the beaches over the last few years. It’s clear to regular visitors that the introduction of more toilets, showers and walkways have made a positive difference to a day at the beach and the recycling points are a nice touch.

Marbella was identified as the most highly valued beach destination in a recent survey of Spanish tourist destinations and it’s certainly true that no holiday on the Costa del Sol would be complete without at least a stroll down the beach, if not a paddle in the sea, or a sandcastle or two.

Fuengirola is another town that has a beach in Los Boliches which has been awarded the blue flag for several years now. It is one of the widest parts of the beach, and has wooden ramps that go all the way from the paseo maritimo to the sea, great for when the sand is scorching hot! For those who enjoy a slightly more active day at the beach, there are also volleyball nets on […]

Foreign Tourist Customer Service in Marbella

The Costa del Sol has become one of the world’s leading holiday destinations, not just for the superb weather and huge choice of activities, but also because tourists feel safe and welcome here. We all go on holiday to relax and have fun so this is a really important factor, especially when traveling with family.

To reinforce the position of Marbella as an international tourist destination, the Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, and the Secretary of State for Security, Francisco Martínez, signed an agreement for the creation of a Foreign Tourist Customer Service (FTCS).

This means that foreign citizens can use the FTCS to help with a number of security or safety related matters including lost credit cards and documents. The personalised service is primarily in English and is open to foreign tourists and residents alike. This service operates from the existing Tourism offices in Plaza de los Naranjos.

Should an accident/incident occur whilst you are on holiday in Marbella, you can at least have peace of mind that there is someone to help in English and advise you of the procedures to follow. “The fact that a tourist feels safe is a competitive factor for a destination resort”, said Martínez.

This part of Spain is renowned for safety, with many of the urbanizations having 24/7 gated security, video phones and alarm systems so you can just relax and enjoy your holiday! All our holiday homes are safe and secure, just ask us if you would like to know more about a particular urbanization or visit our website to find the perfect holiday apartment or villa in Marbella.

Easter week on the Costa del Sol

We love this time of year in Southern Spain! The towns and beaches receive a spring clean after the winter, and the days start to get considerably warmer! Easter is an important time in the Spanish calendar and is hugely celebrated by the whole country.  If you are lucky enough to be on holiday here during this time, you will be sure to find plenty of things to see and do!

The history of Easter in Spain

Holy week (Semana Santa) is an event rich with culture, celebrations and fantastic processions which have become a big part of Spanish tradition since the 16th century.  You may have already seen various groups of people (nazarenos) wearing tall pointed hats and robes with faces covered; this is all part of the Easter tradition in Spain and has a symbolic meaning. The face cover represents shame for the sins committed throughout the year and mourning for Jesus Christ. The pointed hats are said to bring the penitence closer to heaven and are removed on Easter Sunday to mark a victorious end to mourning.

From every Catholic Church, a local brother hood “costaleros” carries a large antique throne, traditionally to the cathedral then back to the church, with some of them weighing as much as 5,000 kilos! The pain and suffering coursed by carrying such a heavy weight is actually a symbol of what Jesus experienced carrying the cross. In fact, all of the parades from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday depict the story about the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is a great reminder of why we celebrate this time. Every part of Spain has different rituals to celebrate the Easter story, so where ever you go you are sure […]

If you are on a budget this year, renting a holiday home in Spain for a week or two can work out a lot cheaper than staying a hotel, especially if you are traveling with family. For instance, a 3 bedroom apartment in Fuengirola, (based on 6 people sharing) can work out at less than €100 per person for a whole week’s accommodation! There are loads of stunning areas to choose from depending on what you want from your holiday. Whether you want to be near the beach, somewhere with land for the dog, or somewhere tranquil yet not too far from amenities, you can find it all on the Costa del Sol. Here are some […]
