Holiday tips for Spain's Costa del Sol

What’s New on the Costa del Sol for Summer 2016?

There’s always lots going on in the Costa del Sol, but we’re excited about some of the announcements being made for summer 2016 and we wanted to share!

Firstly, there have been some amazing performers announced to be coming to the Costa del Sol to perform. Seal will be at the Puente Romano, Simply Red will be in Fuengirola and Tom Jones (alongside 23 other amazing acts) will be at Starlite in Marbella – this is going to be amazing.

Secondly, Marbella is due to get its first gourmet food market right in the centre of town. This will be a 470 square meter gourmet food market on the centre street Ricardo Soriano, where foodies can dine, shop and enjoy the amazing local produce and cuisine. Apparently it’s due to be open for the peak season of July and August which would be great.

Thirdly the amazing artwork Mural by Jackson Pollock will be shown for the first time ever in Spain at the Picasso Museum in Malaga in spring and summer 2016, which is a great reason to visit this wonderful gallery in the centre of the historic part of Malaga. You should also visit the Museum of Malaga which has had some amazing pieces restored for its Archaeology and Fine Arts collection and is hoped to be open soon. Whilst you’re there you can visit the CAC Malaga’s contemporary art museum, the Carmen Thyssen museum and the new Pompidou centre – so it’s a real cultural destination.

Fuengirola is celebrating its 175th anniversary of its autonomy this year and promising to top the 107 cultural events held in the city in 2015, so watch this space. There will also be a packed schedule of events, parties […]

Five Unforgettable Costa del Sol Experiences

The Costa del Sol is synonymous with sun, sea and beaches, but there are a huge range of things to experience here, from the wild to the wacky, from the adventurous to the tasty. Here are just a few surprising, exciting activities you can experience on the Costa del Sol that you may not expect.

Night Time Wolf Safari – Each full moon you can visit the Lobo Park (or wolf park) in Antequera, inland from the Costa del Sol for a night time tour of wild wolf habitat. Enjoy a delicious meal and then head out into the night with torches to find the Alaskan wolves, Eurasian wolves and Iberian wolves and watch them in their native habitat at play and rest and hear them howl into the night. Recommended Holiday rental near to Antequera – We’d recommend basing yourself in the lovely village of Coín overlooking the spectacular Guadalhorce valley to be within easy reach of Antequera, Malaga, Benalmadena and Fuengirola. We have a great 4 bedroom villa in rural Coin with stunning views, a private pool and extensive gardens with fruit and nut trees.

Learn about Spanish wines – There are several wine museums in Malaga, Mijas and Manilva to name a few, these are great opportunities to find out about the wine making process and the history of wine in Spain and also have very reasonably priced wine tastings. A great night out for wine lovers is a visit to D-wine in San Pedro which is a wine shop, restaurant and bar, with special tasting machines which allow you to sample over 30 wines by the glass. They arrange regular wine tasting events and the restaurant comes highly recommended. […]

Food Festivals on the Costa del Sol

Back in December we shared the good news that the Costa del Sol had been awarded yet more Michelin stars, recognising the area as a real foodie paradise which is perfect for a spot of Gastro tourism. Read the full article here

As fantastic food is so important to a great holiday and we’re lucky enough to have some of the best of it here in Spain, we thought we’d highlight some of the amazing food festivals that take place here during the year. Timing your visit to coincide with these great events and booking yourself into one of the Michelin starred restaurants, makes for the perfect trip for anyone who loves food and allows you to see a different side to the Costa del Sol.

Feria de Los Pueblos, Fuengirola – 28th April – 2nd May – Travel around the world through food and music with this great festival. Around 50 different countries are represented, each of them having an area where they can showcase their food, music and traditional dress. This is a unique opportunity to get to know different cultures and try authentic food from all over the world without leaving Fuengirola’s Fair Ground. If this sounds like fun, here’s a great 2 bed apartment in Fuengirola which could be your base.

Malaga Gastronomy Festival – 29th April – 5th May – At the same time as the Feria de Los Pueblos is the Malaga Gastronomy Festival, so it’s a great time to come and enjoy both festivals in one trip. This is the third edition of the festival, which had 50,000 visitors last year alone. There will be celebrity chefs, cooking demonstrations, different gastronomic areas and activities going on all over the city, […]

Get in the mood for love with a romantic getaway

There’s no escaping Valentine’s Day, with cards, balloons, flowers and gifts starting to fill the shelves as soon as Christmas is out of the way. But if you haven’t decided what to do yet and want to avoid the clichés or do something very special, then why not whisk the one you love away from it all for some winter sun in Spain. This year 14th February falls on a Sunday, so it’s a great opportunity to go for a short break, from Friday to Monday. We have a range of holiday rentals available for short breaks, so please just ask to see the collection.

The Costa del Sol is a great place to spend Valentine’s Day, as it’s not so commercial or over the top as the UK, yet still feels very special. Many of the International restaurants put on special events for the night and you can see a list of great options for Valentine’s on the Costa del Sol on My Destination Marbella.

Alternatively you can create your own romantic moments. To help you create something really special, here are a few ideas (don’t worry, we won’t tell her you didn’t think of it yourself) –

Picnic on the Beach – Sitting on the beach with a bottle of champagne or Spanish cava, ham, cheese, strawberries and chocolates with the sand between your toes is a very special experience and even better when it’s in February and so cold at home. This is a low cost, but very romantic experience, we’d suggest you go down there in the early evening and watch the sun go down.
Take the cable car up to the top of Mount Calamorro in Benalmadena and enjoy the 15 minute ride […]

Recommended Winter Sun Destination – San Pedro de Alcantara

Beat the January blues by booking a winter sun getaway to the Costa del Sol!

It’s hard when the decorations come down, the nights are long and the days cold and wet, but just a few hours away is Spain’s sunshine coast, with lovely weather all year round.

We had a record breaking December with temperatures in the 20s and hardly any rain and predictions are it will be a mild start to the year as well. February is a lovely time to visit, when spring is just around the corner, but prices are still very reasonable and you can feel like one of the lucky locals. Picture yourself strolling along the paseo, enjoying delicious food, walking in the surrounding hills and enjoying some great sports at the beginning of this year, it’s nearer than you think. Also, even if it does rain, you know it’s falling on the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains as snow, so why not pop up there for a day on the slopes? Every cloud has a silver lining you know!!

If you do fancy a winter getaway, the location really counts, as you want a town which is full of life all year round and has plenty to do no matter what the weather. This month we wanted to recommend the lovely town of San Pedro de Alcantara, just west of Puerto Banus. It is becoming more and more popular with locals and visitors alike due to a number of new parks, play areas and facilities, plus a brand new “boulevard” which has brought the town together. The new fame is bringing with it lovely new coffee shops, restaurants and a real buzz, perfect for a winter getaway.

San Pedro has a fantastic […]

Winter Sun and Skiing – The Perfect Combination!

The Costa del Sol is in the enviable position of having glorious weather and beaches which can be enjoyed all year round and the extra bonus for the winter visitor of being able to ski just 2 hours away in the Sierra Nevada. Starting the day on the beach and hitting the slopes in the afternoon is a surreal experience, but a wonderful one and something we’d definitely recommend. It’s an easy day trip, or you can stay overnight if you want a more leisurely time in the snow. The ski season runs from 1st December to 1st May so there’s plenty of time to come and try it for yourself.

It was a tough start to the season for all ski resorts in Europe and Sierra Nevada suffers more than most due to its southern location. However, as temperatures dropped towards Christmas they were able to get the snow cannons out and open more runs on the lower slopes and they received a brilliant gift for the special day of the Three Kings with heavy snows falling, low temperatures and more snow forecast this weekend. January tends to be a month with more rain on the coast which means snow up in the mountains, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed for much more snow to come. To check out the latest ski conditions and look at the web cams visit http://sierranevada.es/en/

The best time for skiing in the Sierra Nevada tends to be February and March when the January snows form a good base for skiing and winds tend to be lower. Plus as it’s the low season for the Costa del Sol, the flights and holiday rentals are much cheaper than in the summer, […]

Top Tips for choosing a holiday rental property for Christmas

It’s Christmas time and amongst all the mistletoe and wine, we’re also enjoying some great winter weather here on the Costa del Sol and it’s not too late to escape the dark, cold and crazy crowds of Christmas shoppers and disconnect from it all for a special Spanish Christmas.

Check out our last post for the low down on Christmas on the Costa del Sol and visit Marbella Family Fun and My Destination Marbella for news on Christmas events and parties to enjoy.

If you’re now feeling inspired and want a last minute trip, there are loads of great holiday rental properties to choose for a Christmas getaway on the Costa del Sol. To help you choose the right one for a winter break, we’ve put together a few tips and things to look out for which will make sure you have the best time –

Make sure you choose a location which is busy all year round or close to a vibrant town – During winter it can be very quiet on a holiday development or in a small residential area which has really been designed for summer time and you can feel a bit isolated. You’re better off choosing somewhere within one of the busier towns such as; Estepona, Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmadena and Torremolinos which are busy and have lots to offer all year round.
Select a property with heating or an open fire as Spanish homes can be chilly in the winter.
Think about whether you want to hire a car or not – This will influence where you decide to stay, as if you don’t want to drive we’d suggest being on the train line from Malaga, or being in an urban area where you […]

Visiting the Costa del Sol for Christmas

It feels like summer only just finished on the Costa del Sol, but now that Halloween is over and the clocks have gone back, we can’t deny that Christmas is nearly upon us.

If the dark, cold weather is getting you down and the endless Christmas songs and ads are already driving you crazy, why not consider a different kind of Christmas this year in the winter sun destination of the Costa del Sol?

Those who can feel bah-humbug about Christmas in the UK, will find a Spanish Christmas refreshing and relaxing. There’s much less emphasis on the commercial side of Christmas, decorations don’t go up until the beginning of December and the events are quite low-key and charity focussed as opposed to a huge corporate marketing machine.

You can choose to indulge in Christmas as much or as little as you wish. Want to feel festive? Head into Marbella’s Old Town or into Malaga’s shopping district to see the lights and sample some chestnuts and vino caliente (mulled wine), visit one of the Christmas markets or go and hear carols at one of the stunning churches. There’s a new synthetic ice rink in San Pedro Boulevard which I am sure will be really popular during Christmas and kids can visit Santa in his grotto either in La Cañada shopping centre, or in Marbella’s Plaza Alameda. A really nice idea is to explore the chapels and squares in Marbella’s Old Town by following the routes to see the traditional “Belen” or nativity scenes, which range from the simple to the incredibly complex and ornate. Check out this page for Christmas activities in Marbella in English.

However, if you want to escape and disconnect from all the festivities, no […]

Recommended Holiday Destination – Puerto de la Duquesa

I am sure that everyone has heard about Puerto Banus, but how many of you know about Puerto de la Duquesa? On the western Costa del Sol, between Estepona and Sotogrande, Duquesa is a stunning little marina, lined with bars and restaurants, and a lot to offer holiday makers.

Whatever food you fancy from the old favourites of Indian, Chinese and Italian, through to Argentinian steak, Thai and Moroccan can be found here. Plus, because there’s so much competition the standard of food and service is actually very high. Popular with English tourists, everyone speaks English and you can get fry ups and watch sport to your hearts’ content. At night there’s a pretty market and the lively bars have live music. If you’re looking to party into the early hours you can find that too!

The great thing about the area is that just a ten minute stroll along the promenade to the west is the charming village of Castillo de la Duquesa, famous for its fish restaurants with a traditional Spanish vibe, plus events in the medieval castle.  Ten minutes stroll to the east is the bustling town of Sabinillas, with shops, bars, restaurants and beautiful beaches, as well as a massive Sunday market. You can also hop on a bus to the large town of Estepona with its great shopping, packed programme of events, excellent nightlife and new botanical gardens, so there’s plenty to do without needing to hire a car.

We have a number of great holiday rentals in Duquesa and the surrounding areas, so please contact us to request the full list. But if you like to be in the middle of the action, we can recommend this 2 bedroom apartment Duquesa […]

Top Inland Costa del Sol Holiday Destinations

Best White Village
We recommend Casares to the west of the Costa del Sol, the most picturesque white village in the area. The white houses are perched high on a hillside surrounding an old fort and church, it’s breath-taking. As well as being beautiful, it has developed a reputation as a gastronomic hotspot, with lots of great restaurants to enjoy. It is brilliant for birdwatchers with many birds of prey in the area, plus golfers will be spoilt with several great courses in the area. Casares has a good selection of modern holiday apartments and town houses on the outskirts of the village, so you can enjoy comfort and great facilities yet also be close to the village itself. Check out this Casares 2 bedroom holiday apartment located on the Casares golf course, in a lovely complex with several pools and shared garden, plus a discount on green fees for the golf course.
