The best places to enjoy water sports on the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol has 161 kilometres of beautiful coastline and the Mediterranean Sea is never very far away, so it’s no wonder that water sports is such a popular activity here. You can find people on almost every beach offering pedalos, jet skis, kayaks and more, but we wanted to explore three towns where you can find a wide range of activities in a small area.

Fuengirola

Fuengirola has wonderful blue flag beaches and a busy marina and is a centre for water sports where you can go parasailing, scuba dive, fish and take out jet skis. There are lots of options to choose from, take a stroll down the front and around the marina and you can easily see what’s on offer.

Marbella

Marbella has a lot to offer the water sport enthusiast, including a popular diving school and a stand up paddle board centre, which can both be found in the Puerto Deportivo. Another good area for water sports is around Funny Beach which offers all the normal stuff, plus a wave x ramp where you can surf and flyboarding, where you can take to the air.

Estepona

Estepona has a pretty marina which is the main base for water sports in the area. On the Western Costa del Sol, Estepona is within easy reach of the famous Gibraltar Straits and has many boat trips leaving for whale and dolphin watching as well as fishing. You can also learn to paddle surf, kite surf, windsurf and kayak in several schools and businesses which hire out this equipment for you to enjoy. The beaches are wide and sandy and generally less crowded even in the summer months, so it’s a good choice.

A little further afield is Tarifa, the […]

Whenever you visit the Costa del Sol during the summer season there’s usually a feria taking place that you can enjoy. These ferias are week-long celebrations which each town and village has to celebrate their patron saint, or a significant date and are a great excuse to party! For the whole week there are day time and night time activities involving loud music, flamenco, great food and free flowing drinks and an amazing party atmosphere. It’s a chance to see the Spanish spirit at its best, so seek one out when you visit. Here’s a great list of all the Costa del Sol ferias, so you can look at where the nearest one is to you.

If you want to time your visit to fit with the best of these celebrations, here are three highlights for you.

Marbella Feria 6-12th June – Marbella’s feria is one of the first one of the season, taking place in the first week of June. The feria begins on the 6th with an amazing firework display which you can enjoy from one of the bars in Marbella’s port. Then the day fair opens, which takes place centrally at the Paseo de la Alameda, the pedestrianised area running from the main road by the Old Town, down to the seafront promenade. This is a new development from last year and really makes for a great atmosphere. From 1pm to 8pm, there’s stalls selling great food and drinks and playing music, dance performances and a party atmosphere. For the evening, there is a fair by the La Cañada shopping centre, where you can enjoy the rides and there’s more music, food and drinks to enjoy. It’s a wonderful party.

Play Golf on the Costa del Sol in 2017

There are so many reasons to love the Costa del Sol if you’re a golfer, but the main ones have to be the number and quality of the golf courses in the area, the ease of access between them and the lovely weather which enables you to play all year round.

It is home to one of Europe’s best courses Valderrama, which recently announced that it would host the Andalucia Valderrama Masters in October this year. As part of the European Tour, it will bring 150 professional players to the course and further cement it as one of the best in the world. This is just one of over 70 courses on the Costa del Sol, so no matter your handicap, preferences or budget, there are courses to suit you.

Here are some courses we really like and great holiday rental properties right by them.

Calanova Golf Club – This is a challenging and well-maintained course behind La Cala de Mijas. The location is ideal, as it’s an easy 30 minute drive from Malaga airport, and within just five minutes’ drive from the busy and attractive town of La Cala and its beautiful beaches. It offers good value for money, with special deals such as greenfee, buggy and a set of clubs for 82€.

If you like the sounds of the location and course, we have a great 1 bed penthouse on the front line of Calanova Golf Club, with great views over the course and down to the sea. Furnished to a high standard, this cozy apartment is perfect for a couple of keen golfers and includes a spacious south facing terrace and a hot tub.

Los Arqueros Golf and Country Club – This was the first course […]

Looking ahead to Easter on the Costa del Sol

We have just over a month before Easter is upon us, with Semana Santa or Holy Week starting on the 9th of April with Palm Sunday and then going through to Easter Sunday, or Resurrection Sunday, on the 16th of April.

Easter is a great time of year to take a short break, with several bank holidays so you won’t have to use so many precious holiday days. Good Friday is on April 14th and Easter Monday is on April 17th, both of these are bank holidays, so you can have a wonderful long weekend break. Have you decided where you’re going yet?

Why don’t you consider Spain? Semana Santa is a really important time of year for this catholic country, and rather than just have an Easter egg hunt and stuff yourself on chocolate, you can immerse yourself into the culture of catholic Spain by watching the amazing parades. They may look a little sinister with the Klu Klux Klan style headdresses, but there’s nothing to be afraid of, these parades are simply a way of telling the Easter story and worshipping. For the onlooker, they are full of pomp and ceremony and display the most wonderful statues on heavy floats depicting different scenes from the Easter story. These enormous “tronos” are carried through the streets by bands of devotees and followed by hundreds of worshippers and are really spectacular.

Some of the processions are joyous, but most are solemn and powerful. Many are held at night and lit by candles for added drama. As well as the hooded figures, you may also see women in black holding candles, these are known as the widows of Christ and are very striking.

If you want to experience the […]

Enjoy amazing live music – Starlite Marbella have announced that both Elton John and Andrea Bocelli will be performing at this year’s month long celebration of music, with many more being announced over the coming months. Why not come along and combine a great holiday with this outstanding concert?
Visit the 5* destination of Marbella – Last month the Marbella Town Hall were at one of the leading tourism fairs, confirming their place amongst the world’s best tourist destinations due to their unbeatable combination of gastronomy, sports, beaches, natural beauty, culture, leisure and shopping. Marbella has so much to offer and is a stunning town to visit all year round. If you want to come in summer, make sure you book early to avoid disappointment; it’s going to be busy!

Fuengirola Events 2017

As we said in our last post about holidaying around Malaga, Fuengirola is an excellent holiday destination due to the amazing beaches, restaurants, shopping, eating out and activities for all the family. What we didn’t mention, was the great events programme that this vibrant town runs each year. There’s almost always something going on, but here are a few highlights that you should put into your diary, which are a great reason for a trip.

The first one of the year is the Feria Internacional de los Pueblos, which is being held from the 27th of April to the 1st of May in 2017. This is a celebration of the huge range of nationalities which call Fuengirola home, and showcases their music, dance, culture and most importantly their food! You can wander around the “casetas” or little houses which each represent a different place, listen to their music and try some of their most delicious and emblematic dishes. Make sure you come hungry though, last year there were more than 30 places represented including Italy, France, Argentina, the UK, Egypt, Greece, Venezuela, Senegal and India.  There are also parades, performances and a brilliant atmosphere. Stalls open from 1pm each day and close at 4am and it’s always an amazing party.

The next date for your diary is the Fiesta de San Juan on the 23rd of June, one of the best parties of the year here on the Costa del Sol. This festival is all about celebrating the longest night of the year by building a bonfire on the beach, eating, drinking and making merry. Check out our guide on how to celebrate San Juan Spanish style to find out more about this great festival.
